THE FAITHFUL NURSE
A King had three queens. None of them had mothered a baby for him. The king’s enemies in and out of the kingdom were glad that
the king would die issueless. Then they could grab the throne. Luckily the third queen gave birth of a male baby. The enemies were dismayed . But they were cruel and thought of killing the baby. Accidentally the mother died during childbirth. This report heartened them.
The king did not depend on his two barren Wives for nursing the baby. He employed a young mother with a baby to look after the prince. She went on tending the two babies without any discrimination. The king was pleased. But the enemies of the king planned to kill the prince by any means. They bribed the guards to enter the baby’s room unhindered.
The Faithful Nurse story writing
One of the faithful maid-servants of the dead queen managed to overhear the conversation of the guards and the enemies. She made no delay to inform the nurse. The king that night was out on hunting. The enemies picked up the time as the most opportune one.
The nurse thought, “The king has entrusted the baby to me. The baby is the next king of this kingdom. I am too weak to combat the enemies. So I must fly.” She pulled off the dress of the prince and adorned her baby with it. Then she left the palace, keeping her own baby to the mercy of the enemies.
The enemies entered the room and with a joy of victory killed the nurse’s son. The king returned and heard all that happened. Full of gratitude he offered rich awards to the nurse. She refused these with all humility. The faithful servant in her made her sacrifice her own baby to save the prince. Now the mother in her prompted her to commit suicide in the grief over her son’s killing. And the king then erected a beautiful tomb in honour of her faithfulness.
Moral : Sacrifice is not sold but made.
